Can Deepika Padukone be arrested in drug case? What the Legal Expert Says

Mumbai:
Deepika Padukone is being questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on suspicion in a drugs case. Bollywood's drug connection came to light during the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput's death. Now in this case many big actors are surrounded. One question on the minds of many is whether Deepika Padukone will be arrested. The Economic Times spoke to some of the biggest legal experts about this.

Very low value of WhatsApp chat: Majid Memon
Senior Legal Expert Majid Memon says the Narcotics and Psychotropic Act (NDPS) is a strict law. The NCB has a lot of power to investigate. But as far as Deepika's case is concerned, she can be questioned as a witness or as an accused. In this case WhatsApp chat has very little value. Also need to know if he played an important role in giving drugs to other people or only took drugs himself? Many people take drugs so this can be a minor issue.

Think about the arrest of her haste: Hitesh Jain
has found evidence of prior misconduct other Legal Expert Says Hitesh Jain and needs to be investigated, so named in the summons to them. All I can say at the moment is that the statements made against him by people other than his WhatsApp chat will be questioned. It is too early to think of Deepika's arrest. Even if he is arrested, it will be under Section 20 of the NDPS. But we also don’t know what material is in front of them.

Deepika cannot be charged under NDPS Act: Rizwan Merchant
Law expert Rizwan Merchant has fought the cases of several Bollywood celebs. They say Riya and Deepika's case is quite different. Rhea is accused of taking drugs and paying for them. There is no such charge on Deepika. The WhatsApp chat between Deepika and Karisma can be taken as evidence, it proves nothing but this. One person texted and another received, this chat is from 2017. The NCB will not be able to claim that drugs were found on it. Even if Deepika accepts this chat it will not come under NDPS Act. No charges can be brought against Deepika except for consumption. Deepika may have to go to a rehab or detox center at most.
