In the US election, Joe Biden appears to be winning against his Republican rival and incumbent President Donald Trump. As per the trend so far, Biden has got 264 and Trump has got 214 electoral votes. A majority requires 270 electoral votes. Now the question is whether India will get the same tea from Biden as Trump has shown in his relationship with India and his progress and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's work. Some speculations are being made regarding some important matters and issues in this regard. Biden described India as a "natural partner" and speculated that his administration could take important and mutually beneficial decisions in the Trump administration instead of hurting India.
What will be the impact on the relations between the two countries?
America is going to meet a new president. It is almost certain that Biden will enter the White House and Kamala Harris will be his deputy. The US election is important from India's point of view, as India's relations with the US have become stronger in recent times. Tensions on the Ladakh border with China have brought India and the United States closer together. If the US gets a new president, it will be good or bad for India.
How appropriate is it to judge from certain statements?
A group in India believes that the way Biden and Harris are voicing their views on human rights and the NRC-CAA in Jammu and Kashmir could upset India. But it is not appropriate to judge both on the basis of some statements. Biden has been working on issues related to foreign policy for decades. They have a good idea of what issues are important at the international level. Experts believe that the fundamental difference between Biden and Trump is that Biden is far-sighted and Trump does not back down.
Will relations with India improve if Biden becomes president?
According to an article written by US Professor Sumit Ganguly in our correspondent Times of India, despite Trump's good relations with Prime Minister Modi, he has given India many blows. Trump's sudden and bizarre kind of decision has not made his tenure so rewarding for India. Ganguly blamed Trump's decisions such as raising tariffs on Indian goods, withholding H-1B visas, offering to mediate on the Kashmir issue, which has hurt India. He also said that India-US relations are based entirely on Lev-David.
A good knowledge of foreign policy can be useful
In his article, Ganguly also said that Biden could benefit foreign policy more than India has suffered because of Trump. He says Biden's foreign policy is more stable than Trump's. For example, the US is withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan, the US is seeking India's help to stabilize the country. As president, Biden is less likely to get his feet wet on issues that are politically like a minefield.
America's policy towards India, not Biden!
Biden is likely to intervene in the Indo-Pakistani dispute or the ongoing tensions with China. He has worked for the U.S. State Department for many decades. Apart from this, apart from Trump, he is known for listening to his advisers. Biden does not appear willing to change US policy toward India on the basis of a single issue or incident. Apart from this, Biden's attitude towards tourists is also soft, while Trump has on several occasions openly talked about imposing visa limits. Trump has pursued horizontal policies at the business level with India, but Biden is unlikely to do so.
