The DM has the highest power in a district, but after this the Sub-District Officer (Sub District Magistrate, SMD) is the second most powerful. The post of SDM is filled with responsibility, DMs are promoted only after being promoted from SDM. The post of SDM is the highest in the state administrative service. Where the DM is the chief officer of the entire district, who oversees the work of the entire district, while the SDM oversees the work of the subdivisions of the district. SDM works under DM.
There is no fixed working time in the post of SDM because the officer has to be ready for duty at all times. The SDM has to take care of administration matters in its area. To become an SDA one has to pass the state level civil service examination. UPPSC, BPSC, RPSC and other commissions conduct these examinations. Every state has a commission which conducts the Civil Services Examination. SDM is the largest post in the Civil Services Examination of the state.

SDM salary is less than DM, but in this job too many facilities are given. With the responsibility of this post, attractive salary and other allowances are provided. SDM gets salary with grade pay 5400 in pay band 9300-34800. SDM salary starts at Rs 56,100. In addition to the salary, SDM is given many perks and facilities which are as follows-
