Maharana Pratap was a 16th-century king of Mewar, a region in the south-central part of Rajasthan. 
He is notable for his military resistance against Mughal expansionism and was also known for his participation in the Battle of Haldighati and the Battle of Dewair.

Maharana Pratap Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of the king. According to the English calendar, Maharana Pratap was born on 9 May 1540. However, according to the Hindu lunar calendar, Maharana Pratap Jayanti falls on the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha.

History of Maharana Pratap Singh

Born to parents Maharana Udai Singh II and Rani Jeevan Kanwa, Maharana Pratap defeated Mughal Emperor Akbar thrice in 1577, 1578 and 1579 by invading his estate. He belonged to the Sisodia Rajput clan and followed the strict rules of the Kshatriyas to fight Akbar.

Maharana Pratap was the great king who started one of the first wars of independence against the Mughals. After his death in 1597, Maharana Pratap was succeeded by his eldest son Amar Singh I. Since then, Maharana Pratap's birthday is celebrated every year with a havan and puja at the Maharana Pratap memorial at Pearl Hill in Udaipur.

Significance of Maharana Pratap Jayanti

Maharana Pratap Jayanti is displayed by the Mewar king as a symbol of valor, spirit of independence, pride and valor against all odds in his life. Maharana Pratap fought against the Mughal Empire for the sake of his people and their pride. He died at the age of 56 on January 29, 1597, while defending his kingdom against invaders, due to multiple injuries sustained during the incident.
