5G News Update: Giving information on Friday, Union Minister Devsingh Chauhan said that telecom operators are setting up about 2,500 mobile base stations every week to provide 5G services in the country. The Minister of State for Communications told the Rajya Sabha that 20,980 mobile base stations had been set up till 26 November. Of these, Reliance Jio and Airtel have set up 17,687 and 3,293 base stations respectively.
2,500 base stations installed every week
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Chouhan said that telecom service providers have started providing 5G services in the country from October 1, 2022. As on 26 November…20,980 base stations have been set up in 14 states and union territories. On an average, TSPs are setting up around 2,500 base stations every week. He also said that telecom operators have informed that they are currently providing 5G service to their customers with 5G-enabled devices at no extra cost.
Spectrum Reserve for BSNL
Responding to a question on BSNL and MTNL's 5G services, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that BSNL had floated a tender in October 2022 for its requirement of 1 lakh 4G sites. Vaishnav said that further, the government has reserved spectrum for BSNL for its 5G services while conducting spectrum auction in July 2022.
BSNL and BBNL customers are increasing
He also said that public sector telecom units BSNL and BBNL have connected more than 100,000 homes every month, which has increased data consumption by more than 120 GB per month. He told the Lok Sabha on Friday that the combined network of BSNL and BBNL is today adding more than 1,00,000 domestic connections every month. Now imagine, there are more than 1,00,000 home connections every month in rural areas, providing good bandwidth while providing good connectivity. Today the data consumption in these connections is close to 120 GB per month.
