Prime Minister Narendra Modi was recently on Shillong tour, where he is seen in traditional Khasi dress. Some leaders of the opposition tried to make fun of this look of PM on social media. Former cricketer and Trinamool leader Kirti Azad , while posting a post on PM Modi's outfit, commented that what he wore on this occasion was a women's outfit. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has termed this comment of Azad as an insult to the culture of Meghalaya. The BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha has also slammed the Trinamool leader for insulting the tribals.
Kirti Azad said that she did not intend to insult the dress and was just trying to talk about PM Modi's 'fashion statement'. The post has not been deleted till the time of writing the news. Sharing the picture of PM Modi's tribal dress, Kirti Azad wrote, "Neither is he a man nor is she a woman, only he is a priest of fashion." While sharing the pictures, Kirti Azad has tried to tell that the multi-floral embroidery dress worn by the Prime Minister is actually a women's outfit, which can be bought from the e-commerce site.
Azad insulted the culture of Meghalaya
However, social media users claimed that the picture was doctored. On the e-commerce site, the female model is wearing a different dress, whereas the dress similar to PM Modi's dress has been photoshopped on it. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Kirti Azad of insulting the culture of Meghalaya and making fun of the tribal dress. He said that TMC should immediately clarify whether they support its views. His silence would mean support and thus people would not be forgiven.
There should be a case against Azad
BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Sameer Oraon said that if the Trinamool leader has no idea, he should first learn that it was a tribal dress worn by PM Modi. The BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha tweeted, “You are insulting the tribal dress by saying that you are unsure whether it is a women's dress or a man's dress. You and your party have a proven history of pathological hatred towards tribals." The Morcha appealed to register a case against Azad under the SC/ST Act.
