The United States once again welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's position on the ongoing war in Ukraine, in which he called for stopping all forms of violence and following the path of diplomacy. Earlier, during a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday, PM Modi reiterated his call that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve the Ukraine crisis.
US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said, “We will take PM Modi at his word and welcome those comments when they are in reality. Other countries will also take their own decision on relations with Russia. We will continue to coordinate with allies to minimize the effects of the war." Patel made these remarks in response to a question on India's position on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and PM Modi's call to end the war.
PM Modi spoke to Putin on the phone
Amidst the protracted war on Ukraine, PM Modi spoke to President Putin on telephone yesterday and reiterated his call that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to resolve the Ukraine crisis. Along with this, the top leaders of both the countries also reviewed bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, trade and defence. In a statement issued by Russia, it has been said that at the request of Modi, Putin presented a basic assessment of Russia's position on Ukraine.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said that Prime Minister Modi briefed President Putin about India's current Chairmanship of the G-20 and highlighted its key priorities. This was the fifth telephonic conversation between the two leaders this year. The two leaders held telephonic talks on 24 February, 2 March, 7 March and 1 July.
PM Modi and Putin had a bilateral meeting on September 16 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, during which the Prime Minister told him that today's era is not of war and he exhorted the Russian leader to end the conflict. The two leaders, following their meeting in Samarkand on the sidelines of the SCO summit, reviewed several aspects of bilateral ties, including energy cooperation, trade and investment, defense and security cooperation and other key areas, the PMO said in a statement.
India's stand on resolution of Ukraine conflict
The PMO said, "In the context of the Ukraine conflict, Prime Minister Modi during his talks with Putin reiterated his point that dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward." The telephonic conversation between the two leaders took place just days after it was revealed that Modi would not travel to Russia for the annual India-Russia summit this year. Putin had come to India last year for the summit.
