ByteDance-owned TikTok recently admitted to spying on journalists in the US to access its sources. According to the report, the country is now trying to ban the use of Tiktok. The report states that the US House of Representatives has approved a law last week, which will ban the app in government-owned devices.
Earlier this month, ByteDance conducted an internal investigation that found four of its employees in China gathered information about journalists, including those from BuzzFeed, the Financial Times and Forbes, in an attempt to trace the sources of their coverage. To do this, the Tiktok app has been used. The staff looked at the IP addresses of the journalists and also monitored their movements.
Fired four employees
ByteDance has fired four employees involved in the incident. The company has claimed that the data of American users is not stored in China. But the revelations of the surveillance team's activities have reportedly spread to China and the US, casting doubt on China's claim. A bill to ban the use of Tiktok on government-owned devices was introduced by the Senate earlier this month. According to the report of Nikkei Asia, the bill will soon be signed by US President Joe Biden.
Many states banned Tik Tok
The State Department, Defense Department and Homeland Security Department have already banned it. Similarly, states like Alabama and Utah took action earlier this month to ban the use of TikTok on state-owned devices and IT networks. At least 12 states have adopted such restrictions as of December 13, according to a member of the Federal Communications Commission.
Tiktok allows users to post video clips set to music. By 2021, more than 90 million Americans will be using it. In this, two-thirds of the users of this app are young. This app is already banned in India. The Government of India had banned the Chinese short video app on 29 June 2020.
