Women's safety: Southern cities setting benchmark for North Indian cities

It comes as no surprise that Chennai tops the list of cities considered best for women by women, followed by Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Around 8 cities in Tamil Nadu have promised 'all-round development of women' by making their lives easier.

Brinda Adige: Even though women constitute half of the country's population , women are not seen as representative. For centuries, history has been written from the point of view of those in power, and the dominant patriarchal power chooses the narrative it wants to present. And the same power, is currently being fragmented to redefine it through the personal vision of women based on the contribution of women. Because 'History is lived and written by women every day'.

Chennai, Pune top cities in India for women based on inclusive organizations, inclusive industries, and careers, according to Avatar Group, a research firm that studies diversity, equity, and inclusion solutions , Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Visakhapatnam, Kolkata, Coimbatore and Madurai.

top cities for women

The first-of-its-kind report, 'Top Cities for Women in India', has identified very important indices to measure a city in terms of their potential to empower women's careers. Which includes government policies for security, empowerment, women friendly organizations and industries. A total of 111 cities in India were 'analysed' to arrive at the ranking. It is an eye-opening effort that exceeds its expectations three times-

Enrich the talent pool of women with essential data to help them build an informed career.

When placed in front of the top ranking cities, identify the shortcomings of other cities and overcome them.

– Establish key criteria for attracting women that governments and organizations should focus on.

The empowerment and autonomy of women and the improvement of their political, social, economic and health status is an extremely important goal in itself. The role of the ecosystem in enabling women's employment and in turn reducing their status in the above listed dimensions can prove to be an important determinant of inclusive growth in the country.

Diversity is the identity of India

Research has proven time and time again that when women work, the economy grows. In other words, economic empowerment of women increases productivity and increases economic diversification and income equality, among other positive developments. The primary aspect was cities that are inclusive to women. As a nation, our country is colored with many colors and its diversity is the identity of India and an Indian.

There is a vast and distinctly demonstrable individualism between South, East, West, North-East and North. In almost all human index aspects like literacy, maternal-infant mortality rate, socio-economic freedom, choice of life partner, employment, age at marriage, sex ratio, pollution, GDP, etc. South, West and North-Eastern regions have proved to be better than North. are.

So, it comes as no surprise that Chennai tops the list of cities considered best for women by women, followed by Bengaluru and Hyderabad. As many as 8 cities in Tamil Nadu promise 'all-round development of women' by making their lives easier. What makes southern cities a favourite? Although I do not live in Chennai, I definitely go there whenever I get a chance. Chennai is one of my favorite cities after Bangalore.

It seems that Chennai has paid special attention to the issues of women's safety. such as the concept of public transport (including special free government buses) and shared autos, access to public toilets and street lighting, and an integrated emergency response helpline jointly working with the state and civil society organisations. The culture of a city largely depends on the reclusive nature of the people, and the social status in which women are given a special place is another factor considered in most southern cities.

Dr Alice Evans, a gender empowerment specialist at King's College London, argues that geography, anthropology, occupational agencies, economics and art are important indicators of women's social status and affect freedom. She considers the role of religion as important in increasing the gender gap in India.

Jayalalithaa's role is important

When any kind of decisions are taken after listening to women, the result is different from the decisions taken in their absence. Here former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu late J. It is necessary to mention the contribution of Jayalalithaa. He changed the narrative by reaching out to the women. He talked to them and understood their problems. And during his tenure such policies were made and implemented which proved to be helpful for women.

She shaped and scripted an era of India's most powerful women politicians. She was at the helm of the state government between 1991 and 2016. His rule was the epitome of a culture that was populist and welfare-oriented, branded with his political style that spread to many other states as well. Certainly, from her personal experiences, she knew that women wanted a name and identity of their own. He began with the policies he envisioned for women's alternative economic participation, contribution to family income, and public safety.

His policies were also replicated by the governments of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Media has also contributed significantly to the empowerment of women, which continues to promote the status of women through films with strong female protagonists and social culture rooted in South India.

In comparison, the towns and villages of North India can claim to be safe havens for women in real sense. The abundance of industrial hubs, civic amenities, liveability and climate in Bangalore and Pune definitely make these cities the first choice for women.

The cities of the South welcome every fashion, food, festival, language, style and people by including them. One of the biggest factors is the people and communities that shape the characteristics and patterns of inclusiveness and connectedness, other factors are infrastructure, civic amenities, roads etc. that complete the fabric of a city.

Despite many southern and western cities being listed as women-friendly, we still have to face issues related to women's safety inside and outside their homes, women's representation in the workforce and the political sphere, and the gender pay gap, aspects of decision-making There is still a long way to go to eliminate it.

Still many challenges for women

Due to gender based discrimination and violence, we still face many gender challenges related to physical and mental health of women. Even though the government and corporate managements report following several other safety standards as per laws and policies, the challenges faced by women in both organized and unorganized workplaces still remain.

Most of the top listed cities are yet to develop usable, clean public facilities for women, quality and affordable care services for children, dependent and elderly persons, access to reproductive health, recreation, sports facilities, skilled And effective crime response mechanism is very important as these facilities inculcate a sense of confidence and relief in women which helps them to achieve success and accomplish goals.

Historically man-made mechanisms continue to hinder and curtail the full development, economic and social freedom that all women have the right to aspire to and enjoy while being supported by structural and institutional practices.

Woman is the creation, she is the creator. Women workforce enhances the home and country. Women are the resource, holding up half the sky, tilling most of the land, and making our communities and cities livable for all. Women feel and feelings matter. Feeling secure, happy, comfortable, ambitious, compassionate, alive and powerful are human attitudes. It is not only the right of women to be heard and involved in decision making but it is also wise.
