Budget Bag: There is a lot of discussion about the budget bag during the presentation of the general budget. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is presenting the Union Budget 2023 in Parliament today. This time also he has used a tablet for the budget . However, this is not the first time that the Finance Minister has used a tablet. Even before this, tablets were used for the budget. At the same time, bookkeeping and briefcase are also trending as budget bags. Today we will see how the nature of the budget has changed.
Budgeting in India was started in 1860. At that time the British Chancellor of the Exchequer Chief 'William Evert Gladstone' presented the budget for the first time. Budget is a very big document. That's why a big briefcase was needed for the budget. This briefcase was called 'Gladston Box'.
Briefcase since 1947
Even after the independence of India in 1947, the practice of briefcase continued. The country's first finance minister Shanmukham Shetty presented the budget through a red colored briefcase. Whereas, Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha used a black leather briefcase for the 198-99 budget. Apart from this, Manmohan Singh presented the budget in 1991 with a plain bag.
Ledger showing in 2019
After the general elections 2019, the tenure of Modi's second government began. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had presented the budget of that year in a different way. He used bookkeeping for the first time for the general budget bag. It introduced the whole world to the Indian tradition. At the same time, Chief Economy Advisor KV Subramaniam also linked the budget accounting with the Indian tradition.
Tablet reigns from 2021
There was a tremendous outbreak of Corona during the 2021 budget. In such a situation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented a budget out of the box. The special thing was that paper was not used in this budget and it was a completely paperless budget. For this he had resorted to the tablet. From then till today, Sitharaman presents the budget through a tablet only.
