Karnataka: More than 100 students hospitalized due to food poisoning in the mess

A few hours after having dinner in the mess, the students complained of abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, following which they were admitted to several hospitals.

As many as 137 nursing and paramedical students staying in a private hostel in the Karnataka city of Mangaluru allegedly fell ill at night due to food poisoning , forcing them to be admitted to the hospital late on Monday night. The students complained of abdominal pain , vomiting and diarrhea during the night after which they were admitted to several different hospitals. However, the condition of some of these students is said to be critical.

Regarding the incident, Mangaluru Police Commissioner told that we came to know around 2 in the morning that about 137 students have complained of food poisoning, stomach pain, loose motion, vomiting etc. After this he was admitted to City Hospital. These 137 students have been admitted to different hospitals. We are trying to find out the reasons behind this.

'No need to worry'

District Health Inspector Dr. Ashok told news agency ANI, “He has been admitted to the hospital due to food poisoning. There is no need to panic or worry. We will go to the hostel, talk to the warden and get all kinds of information. All the students are out of danger. There has been no casualty.”

'Contaminated water could be the reason'

City Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar said that the students have been admitted to various hospitals in the city. Contaminated water is being cited as the reason for food poisoning. Sources said the students complained of abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea and were admitted to hospitals last night. Contaminated water is being cited as the reason for food poisoning.
