More than 600 universities including 34000 colleges in the country running without NAAC accreditationUnion Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar has told that thousands of colleges are running in the country without getting recognition from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

There are at least 695 universities and 34,000 colleges across the country, which are running without the National Assessment and Accreditation Council ( NAAC ) accreditation. This information has been given in the Parliament. This data was shared by Union Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha. NAAC's job is to evaluate and certify the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) present in the country. This ensures that the students get better quality education.

The absence of NAAC certification in such a large number of colleges and universities is a matter of concern. The Minister of State for Education said, 'According to the information received by the University Grants Commission (UGC), out of 1,113 universities and 43,796 colleges, only 418 universities and 9,062 colleges are such, which have been recognized by NAAC.'

More than 34 thousand colleges are not NAAC certified

The Minister of State for Education said, "To bring all educational institutions, universities and colleges under the accreditation system, NAAC has significantly reduced the fee structure for assessment and accreditation. Metrics and questions have also been reduced in the manual of self study report for affiliated and partner colleges. He said, the number of colleges running across the country without NAAC affiliation is 34,734.

The National Education Policy (NEP) envisages all Higher Educational Institutions to aim to achieve the highest level of accreditation in the next 15 years through their Institutional Development Plans. The accreditation of universities and colleges is done by NAAC, which is an inter-university body of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
