What is green hydrogen and how much will it change, which was mentioned by PM Modi

India Energy Week 2023: PM Modi said in Bengaluru, India will increase the share of green hydrogen to 25 percent in the next five years by replacing gray hydrogen. In such a situation, the question is what is green hydrogen, how different is it from gray hydrogen and what are its benefits.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the India Energy Week 2023 in Bengaluru on Monday . While addressing this, he mentioned green hydrogen . He said, we are going from gray hydrogen to green hydrogen. India is fast moving towards green hydrogen. National Green Hydrogen Mission will give a new direction to India. By the end of this decade, we are aiming to increase green hydrogen.

He said, India will increase the share of green hydrogen to 25 percent in the next five years by replacing gray hydrogen. In such a situation, the question is what is green hydrogen, how different is it from gray hydrogen and what are its benefits.

What is green hydrogen and what will be the benefit of it?

Hydrogen is an element easily found in nature. Which exists along with many other elements. For example, hydrogen is present in water along with oxygen. Green hydrogen is actually a kind of energy. Which is prepared using renewable energy like solar power. During this, water and oxygen are distributed. According to a BBC report, when electricity is passed through water, hydrogen is produced. This hydrogen acts as energy for many things.

The electricity used to prepare it is obtained from solar energy, so there is no pollution in preparing it. This is the reason why it is called green hydrogen. Environmentalists say, there are many sectors due to which pollution is high, such as oil refinery, fertilizer, steel and cement. Using green hydrogen in these industries can help in making them carbon free.

Green hydrogen can be stored in large quantities. It can prove to be an energy source for long-distance vehicles such as trucks, battery-operated cars, large cargo-carrying ships, trains. In this way, with their help, carbon emissions can be cut across the world. By promoting green hydrogen, the threats of climate change and global warming can be reduced.

How different is green hydrogen from grey?

Usually hydrogen gas is colourless, but in this hydrogen is named green, blue, gray and turquoise.. Which color will be given to hydrogen, depending on how it is made.

For example, in preparing one kg of gray hydrogen, about 10 kg of carbon dioxide comes out and reaches the atmosphere. Due to the release of excess carbon dioxide gas, its hydrogen has been named gray. Comparing both, green hydrogen is much better than gray hydrogen. That's why PM Modi has set a target of moving towards green hydrogen in the next five years, leaving gray behind.

Green hydrogen has many advantages as well as dangers. Hydrogen is more flammable. For example, if a diesel-petrol tank leaks, oil will spread on the ground, but a small spark or leak in a hydrogen tank can have dire consequences.
