It is said that once in the Ramayana period, Lankeshpati Ravana had imprisoned Shani Dev on the strength of his immense powers. After the abduction of Sita, when Hanuman ji reached Lanka in search of her at the behest of Lord Shri Ram, he saw Shani Dev there in Ravana's captivity. On Shani Dev's request, he freed him from Ravana's captivity and threw him far away from Lanka, so that he could be away from Ravana's reach. 

Mustard oil was applied for relief from injuries

Shani Dev suffered a lot of injuries due to Hanuman ji's throwing like this. In such a situation, to give relief to them, Hanuman ji applied mustard oil on the wounds to reduce their pain. This gave him a lot of relief from pain and he was very happy with Bajrang Bali. Giving the title of Sankatharta to Bajrang Bali, he said that any devotee who will offer mustard oil to me in future, his grace will always remain on him. This is the reason that by offering mustard oil on Shani Dev (Shanivar ke Totke) on Saturday, people get the virtuous benefit of his service.
