BBC FEMA ALLEGATION BY ED: Know from where and how the funding of BBC is done

Britain's broadcasting company British Broadcasting Corporation is once again in question. The Enforcement Directorate has registered a case under FEMA against BBC India for irregularities in foreign funding . This is not the first time that the BBC has come under the scanner. BBC has been accused of running an agenda not only in India but also against other countries of the world. Questions have been raised on its funding many times in the past as well. This time too, a case has been registered on BBC India under FEMA i.e. Foreign Exchange Management Act in the foreign funding case itself. Let's understand how BBC works and who does its funding.

BBC working in India for 83 years

BBC was established in 1922 as a private organization in Britain. The BBC's coverage of a general strike in 1926 was appreciated. After this, BBC started reaching out to other countries in 1932. This is the same year when BBC started its worldwide service. In India too, on 11 May 1940, BBC India started with radio. Now it has reached people through all media mediums.

How is BBC funding done?

Most of the BBC's funding comes from annual fees. It is taken from the concerned institutions for giving the rights of live telecast. The special thing is that the recovery of this license fee is done by the UK Government and its Finance Department. After this the government returns that money to BBC. License fee is charged just like electricity bill in India. If it is not paid then there can be jail.

Apart from this, BBC also gets a lot of revenue from commercial subsidiaries. According to a report, BBC earns the largest portion of BBC funding from its programs which are sold internationally. BBC news service also earns a lot from digital. Recently, when the government-backed media organization was told on Twitter, the BBC had also objected to it and said that it only charges as license fee.

How does BBC work

The BBC operates under a Royal Charter. It is like a license given by the authority of Britain. It is renewed every ten years. In this charter the objective of the concerned company is recorded. Earlier the company was run by BBC Trust. It was abolished in 2016 and the BBC Board was established and looks after it.

This is the whole matter

In February, the Income Tax team CBDT raided the Delhi office of BBC India. In this raid, it was revealed that BBC Group has indulged in irregularities in funding from abroad. The accounts of income and expenditure were also not found correct. Nor was the tax being paid. An inquiry was also made by the Income Tax Department regarding this. Only after this ED came into action and action was taken.
