India's new space policy: Space capacity will increase with the help of private sector, steps will be taken towards self-reliance

Read to know how the entry of the private sector in India's space program will increase the country's space capability and how India can take a significant step in self-reliance from Space Policy 2023. SRM University-AP Vice Chancellor Professor Manoj K Arora and SRM Special article by Dr. Harish Puppala, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University-AP.

India's space program has made remarkable progress in the last 5 decades. In fact, the focus has been on implementing application oriented initiatives that use space technology to benefit the masses. This meaningful effort has given India a prominent place in the global space industry. Along with this, it has worked to inspire the scientific and technological development of the country.

The government has recognized the growing business opportunities in the space sector across the world as well as the untapped potential of the country. In view of this, the government has taken several initiatives to create skilled workforce and develop technical capabilities.

The main objective of these initiatives is that India becomes a major player in the global space market. The government is setting up a single window agency IN-SPACe so that private organizations can get involved in the activities of the space sector. This is one of the important steps taken towards encouraging the economy of the private space sector in India.

Along with this, the Government of India has approved the Indian Space Policy 2023. This can prove to be a milestone in India's journey towards enhancing capabilities in the space sector and achieving self-reliance in space technology. This policy can play an important role in shaping India's space activities and guiding the development of its space industry.

The purpose of this policy is also to promote international cooperation in space research and investigation. This collaboration will enable ISRO to focus on science, research and development and strategic launches. At the same time, the participation of private institutions in launching routine and commercial activities, weather and communication satellites can help ISRO to devote more time to space research.

The objective of this policy is to create a conducive environment for the private sector to participate in space activities, thereby promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in the space sector.

We have full faith that the cooperation between government and private space sector will provide better and wider employment opportunities along with development. This will open a wider window for research works and find out the sections which are yet to be tested.

Through this policy, more funds can be raised, due to which the space mission can be increased. This collaboration can attract private industries to invest in various aspects, such as polar satellite launch vehicles, satellite communication systems, satellite-based broadband infrastructure, materials for aerospace applications, production of propellants and electronic packages.

It can be expected that due to this policy, private companies like SpaceX and Boeing, as well as space-related startups will soon emerge in India as well. Many educational institutions like IITs, NITs and IISERs and SRM universities in the private sector are very active in ultra-modern research in space technology and its applications.

Collaboration between government departments, research organizations, academic institutions and private companies will help researchers in weather forecasting, national resource mapping, e-governance and disaster management. Navigation with the help of Indian satellites such as GAGAN and NaVIC can be improved together in better air traffic management. We are confident that with the implementation of this policy, Indian space research is expected to reach new heights with greater participation of scientists and researchers.
