Karnataka Elections 2023: Two sons of former Karnataka Chief Minister late S Bangarappa will be seen competing with each other in the state assembly elections to be held on May 10 to achieve their father's political legacy. One of Bangarappa's sons will contest elections from Congress and the other on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.
One brother from BJP and the other from Congress
Kumar Bangarappa and Madhu Bangarappa are face to face from Sorab assembly constituency in Shimoga district. S Bangarappa represented the seat from 1967 to 1994 before being elected to the Lok Sabha. On BJP ticket, Kumar Jahan is trying to become MLA again from Sorab seat. On the other hand, he is facing competition from his younger brother Madhu, who is contesting on this seat from Congress ticket.
Kumar had defeated Madhu by 3,286 votes in the 2018 assembly polls on this seat. Kumar had quit the Congress and joined the BJP ahead of the 2018 polls, while Madhu, who was then MLA from Sorab, is seeking re-election from the JD(S). Were. Madhu joined Congress in 2021. Going beyond sibling rivalry, the fight between the two often escalates into a family feud with both sides leveling allegations against each other.
Opponents remained in the election even while the father was alive.
Both brothers have been election opponents since 2004, even when Bangarappa was alive. Kumar represented the Sorab seat four times - 1996 (by-election), 1999, 2004 and 2018 - and also held the post of minister. Madhu won the election from this seat in 2013. Both the brothers have also been associated with the Kannada film industry in the past. While Kumar worked as an actor, Madhu was an actor and producer.
Like their father, both have changed political allegiance in the past. Kumar was in the Congress while Madhu has worked with the BJP, JD(S) and the Samajwadi Party.
