'Little India' in Australia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to visit Australia in May. But the NRIs living in Sydney are already waiting for him. The reason behind this is the demand for 'Little India' . Ahead of PM Modi's visit to Australia, the Indian community is demanding the name of a Sydney suburb as 'Little India'.
According to ABC News, 'Little India' is the name used for a group of Indian restaurants and shops in the Sydney suburb of Harris Park. The Indian community is now insisting on naming the entire area as 'Little India'. They believe that keeping this name will attract tourists to this area.
The first proposal was introduced in 2015
According to Sanjay Deshwal, president of the Little India Harris Park Business Association, the first proposal to officially name the area as 'Little India' was presented in 2015. But at that time it could not be named. The Geographic Names Board (Parramatta Council) had banned the use of this name, saying that it caused confusion.
Desire to make 'Little India' an international destination
Sanjay Deshwal said that students and workers will get more due to the name of this area being 'Little India'. Here they will feel like home. At the same time, the Geographic Names Board said that talks are on in this matter. So far no official letter has been received regarding the name 'Little India'. Parramatta councilor Paul Noak said that we want to make it an international destination on the lines of Singapore and other places around the world. It was Noak who presented the proposal of 'Little India'.
