Drinking alcohol in India is still considered a social evil. But people in South Korea are known for drinking alcohol all over the world. The latest figures also confirm this. There has been an increase in the import of wine, whiskey and beer. The Corona epidemic has also changed the way the people of South Korea drink alcohol. Drinking alcohol here was considered a social activity, but now people are drinking it fiercely in their homes .
Bumper increase in whiskey imports
According to a data from Korea Custom Service, the import of whiskey in the country has increased by about 80 percent in the first quarter of this year. Here, 8,443 tonnes of whiskey was imported between January and March, which is 78.2 per cent more than the previous year. This is the highest since the year 2000, when data tracking of alcohol started. This increase has been seen due to the youth of South Korea, who like whiskey more. The reason for the increase in the consumption of whiskey is its cheapness as well as its easy availability.
Jihong Park, a bar owner in western Seoul, told Bloomberg that in recent days most of his customers were drinking Jameson Irish whiskey. Whiskey is more popular among the youth and they do not drink much as compared to our generation. They are interested in knowing its test. He also told that whiskey is not expensive. Its taste is good and it is easy to drink.
Most beer sold in South Korea
Statistics also show that beer is still the most liked in South Korea. In the January to March period, the sales of beer were almost seven times higher than that of whiskey. Last year, the import of wine also saw an increase of 3.8 percent as compared to the previous year. Korea Custom Service statistics show that in the year 2022, South Korea imported wine worth $581.2 million.
Why do people drink more alcohol in South Korea?
There has been a culture of drinking alcohol in South Korea. Its roots are also related to the work culture here. The duty hours of the employees working in South Korea are very long. For this reason, drinking alcohol after work is common here. This is their own way of relieving stress. The whole team and sometimes company attend the dinners that are held here, in which everyone is expected to attend.
Employees say that it is necessary to have it. An employee told Aljazeera that its purpose was never to drink alcohol, but it develops relations with people in business. During work we cannot be so open but here we can create good memories. This practice has given rise to alcohol addiction in the country. The per capita consumption of alcohol in South Korea was 10.2 liters in 2016. However, in the past years, the people of South Korea have reduced the consumption of alcohol.
Drinking habit changed after Kovid
When the Corona epidemic came in the year 2020, the Hosik (dinner) invites failed. Because then strict restrictions were imposed to prevent the spread of Kovid-19. This gave rise to the habit of drinking alone at home. In fact, the report of the Korea Rural Economic Institute shows that in the year 2021, single family members spent more money on alcohol than families with two or more people. During this period, the expenditure on alcohol products was 10.6 percent of the expenditure on food by single households. In comparison, families with two or more people spent 7.3 per cent on alcohol products.
