IIT Madras has decided to open its first overseas campus in Tanzania. Studies will start in this new foreign campus from this year itself. These days the team of professors of IIT Madras is busy in this work. This will be the first campus of IIT in Africa, in which preparations are being finalized to start classes from October 2023.
In February 2023, the team of professors visited Tanzania and agreed to finalize the project in coordination with the local authorities and Indian Embassy officials. IIT Madras was working on this project for a long time. Director Prof. V Kamakoti announced this at a function organized on the 64th foundation day of the institute.
Sridhar Vembu, an alumnus of IIT Madras, has a very important role in the opening of this campus. He is a 1989 pass out and was the chief guest of the program organized in February. This campus is part of the Government of India's campaign, in which all IITs were given consent to open their campuses abroad.

In this connection, the IIT Council Standing Committee had given a report to the Union Ministry of Education, in which it was recommended to open campuses in Britain, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Malaysia and Thailand. All these countries want the campus of IIT Delhi. IIT Delhi has also given its consent to open a campus in UAE.
