Malik Tejani dreamed of building his own brand while working in a shoe store and set an example by making it come true. Malik's company Metro is today a well-known multi-brand footwear chain in the country. Metro Footwear has a presence in 147 cities in 30 states of the country. There are a total of 644 stores across the country. Metro was not only known for shoes, but also for its accessories. Who made a mark among the people by launching his brand one after the other .

The deteriorating situation after partition became the turning point

Malik used to sell shoes during the British rule. Malik Tejani started working in a showroom in Mumbai in the 50s. After working here, he dreamed of launching his own brand. After partition, the situation worsened and he had to leave the place where he used to work.

Only after this he thought of starting some work of his own. Malik took a loan from an acquaintance and with that amount bought the store where he used to work. After this he started his company. In 1955, he launched his brand and opened its first store at Grand Road, Mumbai. Gradually started making its accessories available here with shoes, but officially the company started in 1977.

The strategy that drove the business

Gradually this brand became the choice of people in Mumbai. The year 2000 became a turning point for the company. In the same year, Metro launched its brand Mochi. The company did not limit Mochi's showroom to footwear only, but also made purses, belts, mobile cases, footcare and shoecare products available. Presently there are 150 outlets of Mochi in more than 50 cities of the country.

After this the company presented one collection after the other. The company introduced Value for Money and Walkway Collection. It was this collection that started providing budget friendly footwear to the customers.

Gradually the company expanded its scope and set a target of opening 100 stores in the country. In 2015, Metro tied up with American brand Crocs. Along with this, it was announced to open 550 outlets across the country by 2020. The company picked up the pace and launched its next brand, FitFlap. In 2022 it became a public company. After Malik, his son Rafiq took over the company and planned to expand the business. Rafiq is currently the chairman of Metro Footwear. Rafiq Malik's granddaughter Farah Malik also joined the company and helped in taking the brand forward. She is currently the Managing Director of Metro Brands Limited.
