Germany close Russian consulates: Germany has decided to close four out of five Russian consulates on Wednesday. This decision of Germany is being seen as retaliation. Recently it was said from Moscow that only a maximum of 350 German officers can remain in Russia. After this decision of Russia, Germany decided to close four Russian embassies.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Christopher Berger told the media on Wednesday that we have decided to close four out of five Russian consulates. He said that the purpose of this step is to keep the number of employees and institutions equal between the two countries. Among the 350 German officers that Russia had talked about, people like civil servants, diplomats, school teachers are included.
Germany supported the international ban on Russia
According to the DW report, when Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year, Germany reduced its dependence on Russian gas imports. Germany supported international sanctions on Russia while supporting Ukraine and suspended dozens of Russian diplomats. These included people whom Berlin considered a threat to its security.
Russia suspended 20 German diplomats
At the same time, in April this year, Russia suspended more than 20 German diplomats. Russia called this decision an act of revenge. Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesman said that this action was taken in return for the decision taken by Germany.
