26/11 attack accused Rana knocking on door of US court to avoid being brought to India

Mumbai Attack 2008: Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Hussain Rana is making efforts to avoid being brought to India. He has filed a habeas corpus petition challenging the recent order passed by the US court, which paved the way for his extradition to India.

Let us tell you that the US District Court Central District of California had approved the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai attack accused Rana to India.

Allegations of involvement in 26/11 attacks
Rana is accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, for which he is being prosecuted in India. A total of 166 people, including six American citizens, lost their lives in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Rana (62) has challenged his extradition by the Indian government while filing a habeas corpus writ petition through his lawyer. His lawyer argued that Rana's extradition would violate the US-India Extradition Treaty in two ways.

Biden administration supported Rana's extradition to India
It is noteworthy that on June 10, 2020, India lodged a complaint demanding Rana's temporary arrest for extradition. US President Joe Biden's administration had supported and approved Rana's extradition to India. Thereafter, he was arrested. Rana is currently lodged at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.

NIA probing Rana's role
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India is probing Rana's role in the 26 November 2008 Mumbai attacks by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists. A terrorist named Ajmal Kasab was caught alive during these attacks, who was hanged in India on 21 November 2012. The rest of the terrorists were killed by the security forces during the attacks.
