State Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that the name of Ahmednagar district will now be Ahilyabai Holkar . CM Shinde made this announcement on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar.
The demand to change the name of Ahmed Nagar was being made for a long time. Earlier, the name of Aurangabad in Maharashtra has been changed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad to Dharshiv.
Who was Ahilyabai Holkar?
Ahilyabai was born on May 31, 1725 in Chondi village of Ahmednagar in the village head Mankoji Shinde's house. Then Mankoji Shinde had taken a vow that his daughter should get education. While the education of girls was very rare in that period.
It is believed that Peshwa Bajirao's army commander Malhar Rao Holkar had seen Ahilyabai in a temple at the age of just eight. Then he was so impressed by Ahilyabai's devotion and her simplicity that he decided to marry her son Khande Rao.

Temples were renovated
The period of Holkar rule is considered to be the period of renovation of Hindu temples. Many temples were maintained with the contribution of Ahilya Bai.

How did the city of Ahmednagar get its first name?
