Ahmednagar Name changed: Who was Ahilyabai Holkar, in whose honor the name of Ahmednagar will be changed

The exercise to change the names of many cities of the country is going on. Just a few days back, the Maharashtra government had announced renaming Mumbai's Bandra Worli Sea Link after freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue BD Savarkar.

Like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, now the phase of renaming of some cities has started in Maharashtra too. State Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that the name of Ahmednagar district will now be Ahilyabai Holkar . CM Shinde made this announcement on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar.

The demand to change the name of Ahmed Nagar was being made for a long time. Earlier, the name of Aurangabad in Maharashtra has been changed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad to Dharshiv.

Who was Ahilyabai Holkar?

Ahilyabai was born on May 31, 1725 in Chondi village of Ahmednagar in the village head Mankoji Shinde's house. Then Mankoji Shinde had taken a vow that his daughter should get education. While the education of girls was very rare in that period.

It is believed that Peshwa Bajirao's army commander Malhar Rao Holkar had seen Ahilyabai in a temple at the age of just eight. Then he was so impressed by Ahilyabai's devotion and her simplicity that he decided to marry her son Khande Rao.

She was a skilled administrator and a courageous woman.

The bravery of Ahilyabai Holkar was also praised by the country's first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Pt. Nehru wrote “Holkar's rule, which lasted for thirty years (1765-1795), was full of great achievements. During this, the management system of the government was very good.

He has further written – People were enriched by the skill of Holkar government. She was a very capable ruler and organizer. He was highly respected during his lifetime.

Temples were renovated

The period of Holkar rule is considered to be the period of renovation of Hindu temples. Many temples were maintained with the contribution of Ahilya Bai.

After the death of her husband in the battle of Kumbher against the Raja of Bharatpur in 1754, Ahilyabai took over Malwa. Excelled in administrative and military strategies under the guidance of his father-in-law.

How did the city of Ahmednagar get its first name?

According to the official website of the district, during the medieval period the region was ruled by the dynasty, the Western Chalukyas and then the Delhi Sultanate. Earlier it was known as Nizamshahi. Malik Ahmed Nizam Shah laid the foundation of a city here around the fifteenth century, which was named Ahmednagar.

Jawaharlal Nehru has written about him in his book A Discovery of India – Ahmad Nizam Shah, the founder of Ahmednagar in 1490, was the son of Nizam-ul-Mulk Bhairi, the minister of Bahmani kings. This Nizam-ul-Mulk was the son of a Brahmin accountant named Bhairu.. Thus the Ahmednagar dynasty was of indigenous origin.
