BBC Income Tax Case: BBC admitted, paid less tax in India, Income Tax Department raided

International news group BBC has admitted that it has paid less tax in India. The Delhi and Mumbai offices of the group were surveyed a few months ago by the teams of the Income Tax Department.

The Delhi and Mumbai offices of the International News Group BBC were surveyed by the Income Tax Department a few months back. Now there has been a big disclosure in this matter. The company has admitted that it has paid less tax in India than its liability.

The Income Tax Department is probing the BBC. When his team raided the media group's offices, many documents were also examined. Now TOI report quoting government sources has said that BBC has accepted the fact of paying less tax.

The company showed less income by Rs 40 crore.

On the other hand, HT quoted a Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) official as saying in one of its news that BBC has shown income less by Rs 40 crore in its income tax return. He has sent an e-mail regarding this. Although this e-mail is not legally valid.

The official said that BBC has shown less income, it is like 'tax evasion'. For this he will also have to pay a fine. However, following the legal route, BBC should file a revised return again. Along with this, the remaining tax, penalty and its interest should also be paid. It can be of several crores of rupees.

Controversial documentary was made about Modi

BBC had made a documentary 'India: The Modi Question' about Prime Minister Narendra Modi . Shortly after the release of this controversial documentary, the Income Tax Department surveyed its offices. The opposition also called it an attack on the media by the government and an attempt to suppress the voice.

The Income Tax Department had conducted this survey of BBC offices on 17 February. After this, the Income Tax Department issued a statement. In this statement, it was said that during the survey, it has found some evidence which indicates that tax has not been paid on some transactions (remittances) sent out. The overseas units of the group have not shown it's income in India.
