The central government has launched the booster vaccine for the Omicron variant of Corona on Saturday . Union Minister Jitendra Singh has launched the specific booster vaccine Gemkovac-OM made by Genova using indigenous platform technology. The Ministry of Science and Technology says that India's first mRNA vaccine has been developed with funding support from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
The vaccine recently got approval from the Drug Control General of India (DCGI) for emergency use. The Union Minister has said in his statement that he is very proud that DBT is once again fulfilling its mission. He has always supported technology-driven innovation towards building a 'future-ready' technology platform in line with the Prime Minister's vision of self-reliance.
Gemovac-OM is the fifth vaccine developed with the support of Mission Kovid Suraksha implemented by DBT and BIRAC under the Atmanirbhar Bharat 3.0 package for rapid development of Indian Kovid-19 vaccine. The Union Minister says that within a year of its implementation, Mission Kovid Suraksha has achieved major achievements. This includes the development of the world's first DNA vaccine for the first COVID-19, second the country's first mRNA vaccine and intranasal vaccine and support to make a subunit vaccine against Kovid-19.
Other vaccines can be made using this technology
He says that this 'future-ready' technology platform can be used to make other vaccines within a short period of time. Steady investments from the government have created a strong entrepreneurship as well as startup ecosystem. Because of this, the response against the corona epidemic has been simplified. GEMCOVAC-OM is a thermostable vaccine and does not require the ultra-cold chain infrastructure used for other approved mRNA-based vaccines.
