Free Internet: Kerala became the first state to provide free internet, this is how you get benefit

Free Internet in India: Kerala has become the first state in the country to provide free internet. Recently, CM Pinarayi Vijayan has launched the Kerala Fiber Optic Network (KFON), under which people are provided free internet facility.

Free Internet Service: The Government of Kerala has officially launched the Kerala Fiber Optic Network ( KFON ). This is the flagship project of the state, under which people get free internet facility. Kerala is the first state in India to have started free internet service. Apart from this, Kerala is also the first state to declare internet as a fundamental right of the citizens. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has given the gift of free internet to the poor people of the state by launching this project.

Kerala government announced that it will provide free internet service to 20 lakh BPL families of the state. The government is implementing this mission through the Kerala Fiber Optic Network (KFON). According to reports, about 7,000 families have got the facility of free internet.

Daily get 1.5GB data

This service was launched four years after Kerala declared internet access a basic right. Kerala is the first state in the country to have its own internet service. Under this scheme, every BPL family is given 1.5 GB data per day at a speed of 15 mpbs.

This service is not only for the family, KFON connection has been given in more than 30,000 government institutions, which include offices, educational institutes and hospitals.

What is KFON?

Kerala Fiber Optic Network (KFON) is an infrastructure provider for providing internet service. In Kerala, this network is spread over 30,000 kilometers with more than 375 points of presence. The KFON infrastructure will be shared with all service providers including cable operators.

In July 2022, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) granted Infrastructure Provider (IPL) and Internet Service Provider (ISP) licenses to KFON.

Who will get the benefit of free internet

Under this project, the government wants to provide internet to 20 lakh BPL families. In the first phase, 14,000 houses have been shortlisted, out of which 7,000 families have got free internet service. All the 140 assembly constituencies have been asked to submit a list of 100 BPL families to select the beneficiaries of the first phase.
