Due to the slow pace of monsoon, there was a delay in sowing of Kharif crops. Due to which, in the last 15 days, there has been an increase of 5-15 percent in the prices of rice and its related products like poha, puffed rice, jowar, bajra and chicken. Government's efforts like price control are also not showing any effect. Because of which the prices of wheat and pulses have also remained at a high level. Market officials and analysts estimate that until the rains become favorable for sowing, there will be an increase in food prices. The indication is clear that in the coming days, there can be an increase in the level of inflation in the country.
15 percent increase in Poha and Murmura
Paddy and pulses such as Arhar, Moong, Urad, oilseeds such as soybean and groundnut are the major food products grown in the Kharif season. According to Rajesh Shah, director of Jairaj Group, in a media report, due to the delay in monsoon, the prices of rice and rice-related products like poha and puffed rice have increased by about 15 percent in the last two weeks. The prices of jowar and bajra have also increased, while the prices of pulses and wheat have not declined. He said that if we do not get timely and adequate rains, then the prices of grains are expected to remain stable or go up further.
Prices of pulses may increase
Pushan Sharma, director of Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics, said that further delay of 7-10 days in monsoon could adversely affect the area under pulses crops, which could lead to a rise in prices of overall pulses. For other major crops like paddy, in July, paddy acreage and production may decline if rains are not sufficient. Along with this, more increase in prices can be seen. Delayed rains due to late onset of summer and persistent high temperatures in June reduced the productivity of poultry farms, which pushed up chicken prices.
