The trial run of the Subansiri Lower Hydropower Project built between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh is going to start in July. This project is close to the border of China.
India is going to start a big hydropower project near the border of China. Work on this hydropower project was going on for the last 20 years. This project is being considered very important in the changes being made to meet India's energy needs. Actually, NHPC Limited, which comes under the Government of India, will start the trial for the Subansiri Lower Hydropower Project in July. This project is between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Finance director Rajendra Prasad Goyal told that the first unit will be commissioned in December. He told that by the end of 2024 all the eight units will be commissioned. Hydropower is considered very important to meet the energy needs with the grid. Hydropower becomes very important to deal with disturbances in energy demand. Along with solar and wind power, hydropower is an excellent source of clean energy.
The delay in the project tripled the cost
In fact, the 2 GW Subansiri Lower Hydropower Project was started in 2003. But due to the performance and then the lawsuit filed for the damage caused to the environment, the project started getting delayed. The National Green Tribunal, after staying the project for eight years, allowed it to resume in 2019. As a result, the cost of the hydropower project reached $2.6 billion (Rs 21,000 crore), which is three times the original budget.
Finance director Rajendra Prasad Goyal says that before starting work on the hydropower project, we have to take about 40 approvals from different departments. All kinds of investigations are done at this stage. He further told that but then during the construction when there is a stop, then it creates a problem.
2.9 GW project will start
India sees the construction of large dams along the borders with China and Pakistan as an opportunity to provide livelihood to the local people. Where the Subansiri project is nearing completion. At the same time, NHPC is now giving final touches to the plan to place construction orders for the 2.9 GW Dibang project. This will be India's largest hydropower plant project.
