Since May 23 till now, Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 1.80 lakh crore have either been deposited and then exchanged. The number of notes deposited in the exchange is more than that of the exchange. People have time till 30 September.
The Supreme Court declined urgent hearing on a petition challenging the notification to exchange Rs 2,000 notes without any demand slip and ID proof. A vacation bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Rajesh Bindal perused the report filed by the Registry and said that there is no need for urgent hearing in the matter. The Supreme Court directed that the matter be placed before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud after the summer vacations. Petitioner advocate Ashwini Upadhyay said that it is very unfortunate that the Supreme Court is not taking up such an important matter. After which the Supreme Court said that 'this court is not a public platform'.
Refused before
This is the second time that the apex court has refused an urgent hearing on the issue. Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to list Upadhyay's petition challenging the notifications for urgent hearing on June 1 and said that it would not consider such petitions during the summer vacation. The lawyer had earlier said that Rs 2,000 notes were being exchanged by criminals and terrorists without any necessary slips and ID proofs like Aadhaar.
50 percent 2000 rupee notes came in banks
On the other hand, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das gave a big update on 2000 rupee notes on Thursday. Giving information, he said that since May 23 till now Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 1.80 lakh crore have either been deposited and then exchanged. The number of notes deposited in the exchange is more than that of the exchange. People have time till September 30 when they can go to banks to exchange or deposit their notes. According to RBI, a total of Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 3.50 lakh crore have to be returned to the banks.
