According to reports, the Indian group representing Netflix, Amazon and Disney has told the government that it is not possible to implement its new tobacco warning rule for the streaming giants and it will affect the freedom of expression of content creators .
As part of India's anti-tobacco campaign, the health ministry last month ordered streaming platforms to display health warnings during smoking scenes within three months. In addition, India wants an anti-tobacco disclaimer of at least 50 seconds at the beginning and middle of every programme, which must also have an audio-visual element.
Tobacco Warning Rules: Response of OTT platform
The three companies, and streaming platform JioCinema, were recently discussing pushback options in private meetings with legal warnings as executives were concerned that the rules would require editing millions of hours of Indian and Hollywood content.
According to the letter of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), editing is difficult in all of them, according to the content of different languages on the platforms.
