178 kg garlic in the retail market, why suddenly the price increased so much?

Last year there was a bumper production of garlic. Due to this, its rate in the wholesale market fell considerably. In such a situation, the farmers could not even recover the cost.

Inflation in the country is not taking its name. Like tomato, the rate of garlic is still beyond Rs 170 per kg. In many cities, its price has reached close to Rs 180 per kg. Currently, the price of one kg of garlic in Patna is Rs 172. At the same time, it is being sold at Rs 178 per kg in Kolkata. Whereas, three to four months back it was much cheaper. Till the month of March, it was being sold in the retail market at 60 to 80 rupees per kg. But with the arrival of monsoon it also became expensive.

Whereas, last year garlic was very cheap in wholesale price. In the mandis of Madhya Pradesh, 5 to 8 rupees per kg garlic was purchased from the farmers. In such a situation, due to not getting a fair price, many farmers had thrown garlic on the roadside. But, after the jump in prices last month, the farmers who threw garlic on the road became rich this year. He sold garlic up to Rs 150 per kg at the wholesale price. In such a situation, garlic will become more expensive by the time it comes to the retail market. After all, what happened in one year that garlic became so expensive.

50 percent reduction in garlic area

Garlic traders say that Madhya Pradesh is the largest garlic producing state in the country. The weather and soil here are suitable for garlic cultivation. According to the statistics of the National Horticulture Board, the share of Madhya Pradesh in the total produced garlic in the country is 62.85 percent. But, last year, due to not getting the proper rate, the garlic producing farmers had to suffer a lot. Many farmers drowned in debt. In such a situation, farmers reduced the cultivation of garlic this year, due to which the area under garlic decreased by about 50 percent. According to the demand, garlic could not be supplied in the market. Due to this the prices suddenly increased.

Garlic is supplied from Madhya Pradesh to other states

Garlic is supplied from Madhya Pradesh to the whole country. From here garlic is supplied to many states including South India, Maharashtra and Delhi. When garlic became expensive in the mandis of Madhya Pradesh itself, its prices increased in other states as well. On the other hand, the garlic growers of Ratlam district say that the farmers had halved the cultivation of garlic due to the losses incurred last year. But looking at the prices this time, will increase the area again. In such a situation, it is expected that after the arrival of the new crop of garlic, the prices will start falling.

Uttar Pradesh produces 6.57 percent garlic.

Let us tell you that after Madhya Pradesh, maximum garlic is cultivated in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. These three states together produce 85 percent of garlic. Rajasthan produces 16.81 percent of garlic, while Uttar Pradesh's share is 6.57 percent.
