A UK court has sentenced nurse Lucy Letby to life imprisonment for killing seven newborns at a hospital. Lucy is also accused of attempting to murder 6 other newborns while working at the hospital. As a result of this serious crime, Nurse Lucy will now have to spend the rest of her life in prison.
What is the whole matter?
Nurse Lucy Letby, 33, has been found guilty of killing five boys and two girls in the neonatal unit of Chester Hospital in northern England. Lucy was working at the hospital between 2015-16. According to the Indian Express report, she used to inject insulin or air to the babies or force-feed them milk. The nurse was convicted in the case after a 10-month trial.
A gross breach of trust
Manchester Crown Court judge Justice Goss sentenced Lucy to a severe sentence, saying the nurse had committed a gross breach of trust with a knowing manipulation. Lucy did not appear before the court after being found guilty in the case. Judge Justice Goss announced the sentence in his absence.
Indian-origin doctor had expressed doubt that
Britain's Indian-origin doctor Ravi Jayaram played a big role in getting Nurse Lucy caught. He was among the first to suspect the children's death and report it to the authorities. When the police came to know about these incidents, they investigated it. In the investigation, the police suspected Nurse Lucy and after questioning she was taken into custody. According to Dr. Ravi Jayaram, many of the children killed would have been going to school today.
Rishi Sunak condemned
Britain's PM Rishi Sunak condemned the death of the children and called the nurse a coward. He said that it is cowardice that the perpetrators of such heinous crimes do not directly confront the victims. Sunak said that his government is considering changing the law in such cases.
