After Eris, now the 'World Health Organization' has expressed concern about the new variant Omicron BA.2.86 of Kovid. The 'World Health Organization' has said that it is more muted than other variants of Corona. BA.2.86 is from Omicron's BA. Its first case was found in Israel. So far it has been detected in only five countries – Denmark (2), Israel (1), US (1), and UK (1) and dangerous symptoms of variants have appeared. Due to which the apprehension of fresh Covid has increased. WHO declared it a variant under surveillance (VUM) after only three cases. And it has been monitored to understand its spread and severity.

What did WHO say?

The global health body wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), "WHO today designated COVID-19 variant BA.2.86 as a 'Variant under Monitoring' due to the large number of mutations." Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead for the Kovid-19 response at the WHO, said in a post, "There is very limited information available about this right now, but large mutations. Stringent surveillance, sequencing and COVID-19 reporting are required to track the variant/detect new variants. Even as the spread and evolution of the Covid virus continues, WHO will also do better surveillance, sequencing and reporting. Looks like BA.2.86 is the real thing - now also detected from London, England. Overall 5th case,” Dr. Vipin M. Vashisht, member of WHO's Vaccine Safety Net.

WHO called this new variant VUM

The gravity of the issue can be gauged from the fact that WHO has already declared it VUM based on only 3 sequences. According to Israeli scientist Shay Fleishon, who was the first to identify BA.2.86. Weizmann Fleshon of the Institute of Science said that BA.2.86 was detected in a patient who is not chronic and is not infected by anyone (a person capable of inter-host transmission). In the US, the first case of BA.2.86 was reported by a laboratory at the University of Michigan during "baseline surveillance". The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Thursday that it is monitoring this strain.
