After wheat, flour, rice, pulses, tomatoes, onions and green vegetables, now sugar can also become expensive in the coming days. Because there is a possibility of a decline in the production of sugarcane in Maharashtra, the country's largest sugar producing state. Bad weather and less rain are being blamed for this. So far, Maharashtra has received 20 percent less rainfall than the average. If this situation continues in the coming months, then the production of sugarcane will be affected, which will have a direct impact on sugar production.
According to Bloomberg's report, Sanjay Khatal, managing director of Maharashtra State Co-operative Sugar Factories Federation Limited, has expressed concern about irrigation during an interview. He has said that the ground water level in Maharashtra is falling rapidly. Due to this, the problem of irrigation has arisen in front of sugarcane producing farmers. If it does not rain on time, due to this the water crisis will get deeper.
An increase in the price of sugar may be recorded
If Sanjay Khatal is to be believed, due to less rains, danger has started looming over the sugarcane of the state. If the rains do not improve by September-October, the situation will worsen. The special thing is that in some areas of Maharashtra, 20 percent less rainfall than normal was recorded at the beginning of the season. In such a situation, experts say that if the production of sugar is affected due to less rain in the largest state, then inflation will increase. Especially an increase in the price of sugar can be recorded.
Can also ban the export of sugar
In such a situation, the central government can also ban the export of sugar to control inflation in the retail market. Because the Government of India had recently decided to ban the export of non-basmati rice to control inflation. However, many experts say that it is too early to make this prediction by Sanjay Khatal regarding sugar production, as it will take more than a month for the monsoon to leave. According to the Ministry of Food, the Government of India will take a decision on sugar exports for 2023-24 when the actual estimate of total production is available.
