Congress has handed over the command of UP Congress to veteran leader of Varanasi region Ajay Rai, Ajay Rai stood against PM Modi from Varanasi seat in 2014 and then 2019 Lok Sabha elections. His political career started with the BJP, but later he joined the Congress.

Before the preparations for the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is also seen in active mode. In this sequence, party president Mallikarjun Kharge has handed over the command of UP Congress to former MLA Ajay Rai. Ajay Rai is a veteran Congress leader. He has also contested against PM Modi from Varanasi seat in 2014 and 2019, although both times the margin of victory was more than five lakh votes.

The Congress issued a letter on its Twitter handle informing about this change. Former MLA Ajay Rai will replace former Rajya Sabha member Brij Lal Khabri, who was till now heading the UP Congress. This change is also considered important because the condition of Congress in Uttar Pradesh is not good. There are 80 assembly seats here, out of which only one is occupied by the Congress, in such a situation the biggest question is whether Ajay Rai will be able to revive the Congress.

Ajay Rai has been a former BJP leader

Ajay Rai is counted as a veteran leader of Varanasi region. Because of belonging to the Bhumihar community, he has a good penetration in the Bhumihar community of Purvanchal. Ajay Rai, who contested against PM Modi in 2014 and 2019 on a Congress ticket, started his political career with the BJP. From 1996 to 2007, he became an MLA for three consecutive terms on a BJP ticket. In 2009, he sought a Lok Sabha ticket from the party, after not getting the ticket, he joined the Samajwadi Party, but could not win the election. In 2009, he contested the by-election from Pindra constituency as an independent candidate and won. After this, he joined Congress in 2012 and won from Pindra seat itself.

Came third in the 2014 election

Ajay Rai had contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections against PM Modi. Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal also tried his luck in this election, who finished second and Ajay Rai came third. In 2017, Ajay Rai once again contested the assembly elections from Pindra, but this time he could not win.

Many criminal cases are registered against Ajay Rai

Several criminal cases are also registered against Ajay Rai, including Goonda Act and gangster cases, apart from this, he has also been arrested under NSA law in 2015, for these criminal cases, his four arms licenses were suspended in 2021. They went. At that time, the then DM Kaushal Raj Sharma had told that 26 cases were registered against Ajay Rai, that is why his arms license was being revoked, while Ajay Rai called it BJP's dirty politics.

Mukhtar Ansari bowed down in the court after being punished

Ajay Rai's brother Awadhesh Rai was also in politics. He was shot dead in 1991, the allegation was on Bahubali Mukhtar Ansari. After 32 years, in the month of June, the MP-MLA court of Varanasi had sentenced Mukhtar Ansari to life imprisonment in the Awadhesh Rai murder case itself. After the announcement of the sentence, former Congress MLA Ajay Rai thanked the court by placing his head on the threshold of the court.
