Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar drew parallels between modern-day greats Virat Kohli and Babar Azam ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. He says that the comparison between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam can be a bit unfair at times. Kohli and Babar are considered to be the top batsmen in all formats of modern cricket. They are currently the best batsmen for their respective countries. There has been a debate going on in the cricket world for a long time as to who is the better batsman among the two.
Manjrekar said, "Absolutely, and we can expect that to happen again. Just the one thing you know that guys like Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have had to deal with is that they've had long careers and their careers are about 10- Has lasted for 15 years and whenever there is a rising star, he is compared to someone who has been around for a long time. So sometimes it can be a bit unfair but that is the greatness of these two guys. That they uphold the standard to which the best of a budding sportsperson is equal."
India will start their Asia Cup campaign against Pakistan. The teams will meet for the first time since their T20 World Cup match in 2022. India pulled off a thrilling win against Pakistan in a T20 match in the World Cup, with Virat Kohli playing a crucial knock. Manjrekar believes that the 50-over format will give Babar Azam a good chance to express himself.
The former cricketer further added that, "Yeah, both are very good players. Obviously he is in his youth, but coming at such a stage, we want to say to Virat Kohli and see him with the format that we have here. Not the T20 format, this time in the Asia Cup you might see a little bit of Babar Azam and maybe his place too."
Meanwhile, India and Pakistan will face off in Pallekele, Sri Lanka on September 2. If both the teams reach the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup, then both will be face to face once again. If both the teams qualify for the final, they can meet once again.
