BCCI is the richest cricket board in the world, which also organizes the world's biggest cricket league IPL. Due to which the earning of the board is continuously increasing.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has generated a total revenue of Rs 27,411 crore in the last five financial years i.e. from FY 2018 to FY 2022. Informing the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that this earning comes from media rights, sponsorship and revenue share of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Chaudhary was answering a question of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) MP Anil Desai.
Desai questioned the Finance Minister whether the government was aware of the BCCI's position as the second richest sports organization globally. He requested the government to provide information about the income, expenditure and tax details of BCCI in the last five years. In response, Chowdhury said on Tuesday that the government does not maintain data about the financial health of sports bodies globally, but has shared the board's data with the Upper House.
Earnings are increasing continuously
Giving information, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chowdhary said that in 2017, the BCCI sold the media rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to Star India, now known as Disney Star, for Rs 16,147 crore. The media rights fee was more than double the Rs 8,200 crore paid by Sony Pictures Networks India for a period of 10 years from 2008 to 2017.
The year after that, it successfully sold the media rights of Indian cricket matches to Disney Star for Rs 6,138 crore. Star India had acquired the BCCI media rights in 2012 for Rs 3,851 crore. It also had sponsor deals with brands like Paytm, MPL, Byju's and Mastercard.
How much tax paid in five years
BCCI, the world's richest cricket board, paid Rs 4,298 crore as income tax in these five years. During this, BCCI also spent Rs 15,170 crore. In FY2018, BCCI generated revenue of Rs 2,917 crore, which increased to Rs 7,606 crore in FY22 due to increase in income from IPL and India Cricket media rights.
Rs 48,390 crore deal
BCCI's income is expected to reach another level in FY 2024 as it has signed deals worth Rs 48,390 crore for five years with Disney Star and Viacom 18. BCCI has also tied up with new sponsors like Le Adidas and Dream11. The cricket board has also launched the Women's Premier League (WPL), which was successful this year. It raised Rs 4,670 crore from the sale of five Women's Premier League teams. It also sold the media rights of the Women's Premier League to Viacom18 for Rs 951 crore. The board also raised sponsors worth Rs 200 crore for the Women's Premier League.
