DU removes Economics of Discrimination paper, adds new chapter on Ambedkar

DU has included a new paper in economics, which will replace the Economics of Discrimination paper. The newly included paper will be taught to the graduate students. New paper on Ambedkar has been included.

Delhi University has removed the Economics of Discrimination paper from Arthashastra and replaced it with 'Dr. New paper on 'Economic Thoughts of BR Ambedkar' is included. It will be taught in graduation course. The paper is included under the topic Economics. The new paper covers Dr. Ambedkar's thought and understanding of various aspects of economic systems. This decision was taken in the Academic Council meeting held on 11th August.

Theories of economic development, labor welfare, economic policy making and other issues in the Indian economy during the colonial period are covered in the paper. The new paper has replaced the paper 'Economics of Discrimination'. According to a copy of the syllabus passed, this paper will enable students to explore Dr Ambedkar's pioneering work in the field of economics and relevance in the contemporary world, reports The Indian Express.

Emphasis on the role of farmers

Monami Basu, associate professor of economics at Kamla Nehru College and member of the elected academic council, said that the paper on Dr. Ambedkar has been welcomed by all of us. Students will be able to know about him as an economic policy maker in the post-colonial period, about his views on the colonial economy. He emphasized the role of agriculture and farmers during the colonial period. How are caste and labor related? His views on this will also be taught in the paper.

Reduced focus on caste discrimination

On the other hand, another economics professor from DU said that in the new Ambedkar paper, the main focus on how to explain caste discrimination has been reduced. It is now about 10 per cent of the paper. According to the faculty members, the removed paper was the only paper which focused on the concept of discrimination in the UG economics course.
