With this, the government has increased the target of buffer stock from 3 lakh tonnes to 5 lakh tonnes. Let us tell you, the government has appealed to the farmers not to sell in haste or panic due to the fear of rising prices and crop damage. NCCF and NAFED will buy farmers' onions at reasonable rates. At the same time, at present, onion prices in the market are up to Rs 60 per kg.
Government buying directly from farmers
Two government committees NCCF and NAFED told that they have started direct purchase from farmers in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh on August 22 to keep onion prices stable and check inflation. About 12-13 procurement centers have been opened in Maharashtra and if the demand increases these centers will be increased further. Let us tell you that in the last 4 days, government committees have bought 2,826 tonnes of onions from farmers at reasonable rates. Maximum purchases have been made from Maharashtra. The government has bought onion at the rate of Rs 2410 per quintal to benefit the farmers as well, at present it is Rs 1900-2000 per quintal.
export duty
To control onion prices, the government has imposed a duty of 40 per cent on its export. Let us tell you, the new fee rates will be effective till 31 December. The government believes that in the coming days, onion prices may increase worldwide. Significantly, onion prices in India have increased by 20 percent. The government is afraid that the prices of onions may become like that of tomatoes, so the government is taking this precautionary step.
