IIT's decision on suicide, papers reduced in semester exams, app will track students' behavior

Amid rising cases of suicide and depression, IIT has removed a paper from the mid-semester. At the same time, the behavior of the students will be tracked through the app. The management has taken this decision in the midst of increasing suicide cases in IITs.

IIT Management has taken a big decision to stop the increasing cases of student suicides in IITs and to reduce the stress among the students. Under this, IIT Delhi has reduced one set of mid-semester examinations. There are two sets in the first mid-semester exam. Now students will have to appear for only one set of exams. At least 39 of the total 98 deaths by suicide in India's top higher education institutions from 2018 to 2023 have occurred in IITs, according to government data

According to Rangan Banerjee, director of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, IIT Delhi has reformed its evaluation system and removed a set of mid-semester examinations to reduce the stress of students. He said that earlier we used to have two sets of examinations during a semester. There were final exams at the end of each semester and several continuous evaluation mechanisms.

We conducted an internal survey and based on the feedback received from all the students and faculty, have decided to remove a set of exams. Banerjee said that we realized that the exam calendar was very busy and therefore did this to reduce the burden and stress of the students. He told that this decision has also been approved by the Senate and it will be implemented from the current session.

App will track how students are behaving

According to IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, several initiatives have been taken to reduce suicides and depression of students from the new academic session starting. Under this, such an app has been made, which will track the behavior of the students. The app will also send a reminder to the parents of the students to talk to the children twice a week. Students will also have to record their conversation with their parents.

How many days students come to class, this is how to know

IIT Madras has started Face Recognition Attendance Management System. Student's attendance will now be taken through this. The special thing in this is that if any student does not come to the class or mess for two days, then the management-warden will get its message. Along with this, the institute has formed a team of psychologists to reduce the stress of the students, who will talk to the students regularly.

Let us tell you that a 20-year-old student of B.Tech final year in IIT Delhi committed suicide in the campus hostel last month. On the other hand, on August 7 in IIT Hyderabad, 21-year-old student Mamitha Nayak also committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel.
