Tezpur: India's oldest domesticated elephant died on Monday at the age of 89 in Assam's Sonitpur district. Officials have given this information Officials said that this huge elephant named Bijuli Prasad breathed his last at Behali tea garden of 'The Williamson Magar Group' at around 3.30 am due to age-related problems. People associated with Bijuli Prasad, tea garden workers and local residents have expressed grief over his death.
A tea garden official said, 'Bijuli Prasad was a symbol of pride for 'The Williamson Megger Group'. It was first brought to the Baragang tea garden as a child and was brought here when the company sold the Baragang tea garden. He said that the elephant was living a royal life in the tea garden.
Elephant's age was 89 years
As per estimates, the age of the elephant was 89 years. Padma Shri awardee and eminent elephant surgeon Dr Kushal Konwar Sharma said, "As far as I know, Bijuli Prasad was the oldest domesticated elephant in India." He said that wild Asian elephants usually live for 62 to 65 years while domesticated elephants can live up to 80 years if they are well taken care of.
Sharma said, 'Eight-ten years ago, Bijuli Prasad had lost all his teeth, after which he was not able to eat anything and was about to die. I went there and treated him. I changed her entire regular diet and started giving her mostly boiled food like rice and high protein soyabean. This increased his age. An official of the Behali tea garden said that the elephant was given 25 kg of food every day. (input language)
