NMC changed its decision, now doctors will be able to prescribe not only generic but also other medicines

NMC has changed its decision after coming under pressure from the doctors. According to the new decision, doctors and private hospitals can now prescribe branded medicines to patients in addition to generic ones.

The National Medical Commission i.e. NMC had ordered the doctors to prescribe only generic medicines to the patients. But now NMC has put a stop to this decision and has changed the order. After coming under pressure from doctors, NMC has said that doctors can now prescribe medicines other than generic medicines. After NMC's decision is banned with immediate effect, now doctors will be able to prescribe other branded medicines to patients along with generic medicines.

This was the order

The NMC had issued an order on August 2, according to which private doctors had to prescribe only generic medicines to patients. This order of NMC was strongly opposed by private doctors and the Indian Medical Association. The Indian Medical Association and the Federation of Resident Doctors Association talked to the Central Government on this matter and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also talked about this matter, after which the NMC withdrew its decision.

When the doctors protested, the decision was changed.

MMC has changed its decision after protests by doctors. Doctors say that the quality of generic medicines in India is not good. Patients can be at risk of life by its use. Let us tell you, generic medicine is cheaper than any branded medicine. For this patients have to spend less and due to this the expenditure on health also reduces.

Branded medicines more expensive

In RPM Regulation 2023, doctors have been told to be extra careful. Significantly, branded generic drugs are those whose patent has expired or which are out of patent. It is sold in the market under brand names. These medicines are less expensive than any patented medicine. NMC's decision on generic medicines was also because branded medicines are expensive. A poor person cannot get himself treated with branded medicines. That's why generic drugs were approved.
