Pakistan's cash-strapped government airlines have grounded 11 of its aircraft, including three Boeing 777s, due to lack of money to replace spare parts. A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) official said that the top management has grounded 11 aircraft in the last three years. He said that there is a financial crisis in the airline and due to the rising cost of dollar and petroleum products, no help could be found.
This official said on the condition of not disclosing his name that 11 out of 31 aircraft operated by PIA on international and domestic routes have been grounded at Karachi and Islamabad airports.
Domestic flights affected
He said that due to the financial crisis, airlines are not in a position to buy spare parts since last year, due to which these aircraft have been gradually taken out of operation. The previous government led by Shehbaz Sharif had appointed a new MD in PIA and presented its plan to privatize the state-owned airline. The official said the airline is continuing its operations with the 20 aircraft currently available but its flight schedule has been affected, especially domestically.
742 billion rupees debt on PIA!
According to the information received from media reports, this is not the first time that such news is coming out from Pakistan. Even in the month of May, PIA CEO Aamir Hayat had told that this year the airlines will suffer a loss of 112 billion. He told that at present PIA is in debt of 742 billion rupees.
