Pandit Vishwambhar Nath Kaushik became immortal by writing 'Tai'

Pandit Vishwambhar Nath Kaushik ji got the most recognition from Tai Kahani, which is a unique story of Hindi literature, this is the year of his 125th birth anniversary. Kaushik ji's family still lives in the same locality of Kanpur. Although the grandson Nilambar Kaushik, who carried forward his legacy, is no longer in this world.

Pandit Indersen was one of Ambala. Ambala was a small town then and his advocacy did not work. At that time there was no big court in Punjab except Lahore where he used to go and practice, so he went to Kanpur and soon became a big lawyer. Kanpur was then settled by the British with interest and after the first freedom struggle in 1857, the British government tried to bring the city on the modern pattern and set up a large civil and criminal court. Then many lawyers from Delhi and Lahore and Agra came to practice here. Motilal Nehru, Pandit Prithinath and Pandit Indersen left Ambala and came to Kanpur with them. Pandit Indersen's practice started.

He bought a big zamindari in Kanpur and started living in Bengali Mohal in Kanpur with a big kothi built in it. But Pandit ji was childless. The wealth is so much that even if it is spent freely for generations, it does not decrease, but there is no one to take care of that wealth. Pandit ji finally went to Ambala one day and came back to Kanpur after adopting Vishwambhar Nath, son of his nephew Harishchandra Kaushik. It was the year of 1895 and then child Vishwambhar Nath was only four years old. This child Vishwambhar Nath was later called Pandit Vishwambhar Nath Sharma Kaushik and became famous among the early writers of Hindi story.

125th anniversary year

This is the year of the 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Vishwambhar Nath Sharma Kaushik and preparations are being made to celebrate it with pomp. Pandit Vishwambhar Nath's grandfather was a renowned lawyer of the city and had a large landlord, so there was no shortage of money at home. Child Vishwambhar Nath was more interested in reading and writing stories than schooling. He started doing poetry in Urdu under the name Ragib and also wrote stories. Then he used to write in Munshi Dayanarayan Nigam's newspaper Jamana and in the same Munshi Nawab Rai alias Premchand also used to write. Premchand was then a teacher at Marwari Inter College in Kanpur. Both of them met and it was decided that if they want to reach more readers, they will have to write in Devanagari. Both put their problems in front of Munshi Dayanarayan Nigam.

Rakshabandhan story was published in 1913

Munshi ji said that if you want to write in Devanagari then meet Pandit Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi. They bring out Saraswati and Saraswati is currently the best magazine in Hindi. Munshi ji introduced Premchand and Vishwambhar Prasad to Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi. Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi was extracting Saraswati while staying in Juhi locality of Kanpur. He urged both these Urdu writers to write in Hindi Devanagari. Vishwambhar Nath Kaushik wrote the Raksha Bandhan story in Hindi and Acharya Dwivedi revised it and published it in Saraswati in 1913. Similarly, Munshi Premchand's story Panch Parmeshwar was published in Saraswati in 1916. After this, both these writers started writing in Hindi continuously.

Became immortal by writing 'tai'

Kaushik ji wrote many stories but he became immortal after writing Tai story. In the same way Pandit Chandradhar Sharma Guleri became immortal by writing 'Usne Kaha Tha'. Although Guleri ji had written only three stories in total, but 'Usne Kaha Tha' is a unique story of Hindi literature. Pandit Vishwambharnath Sharma Kaushik also created Tai in such a way that Tai became immortal among middle class characters. Tai means wife of father's elder brother who is called Tai in Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh.

She was such a mother who does not have any child of her own. Her brother-in-law has two children and Tai's husband is so attached to those children that he doesn't mind the fact that he doesn't have children of his own. Day and night she is so sad over her childlessness that the playfulness of these lovely children and their spontaneous playful nature makes her heart burn more.

One day when brother-in-law's son gets so excited about the kite flying in the sky and says that Tai, you get us the kite immediately and if you don't get it, then I will complain about you to Tau. The child has said this because of his natural nature, but Tai gets angry and says that now you have become so insolent that you will complain about me. Now get a kite from your uncle and she scolds that child. The child gets scared. At the same time, a kite breaks and comes towards his roof and the child runs to catch it, but the kite is going down towards the courtyard and in this round, the child's leg slips and he hangs on the parapet.

Now there is only Tai on the roof and that child looking at his Tai calls out to Tai in a bitter voice. But Tai thinks seeing this let him fall. At least my time will pass and she stands silent and the child again says Ari Tai. On hearing this, her affection swells up and she rushes to catch the child, but by then the child's hand slips from the railing and the child falls down in the courtyard. After this, Tai's affection for this child of her brother-in-law grows so much that she keeps on muttering the name of the same child in unconsciousness and when the child gets cured, she starts giving life to him.

Loving aunt

The meaning is that Tai had feminine affection, but due to her childlessness, her affection could not overflow towards this child of her brother-in-law. And when that affection emerged, Tai really became Mamtamayi Tai. Pandit Vishwambharnath Sharma Kaushik was a master in writing psychological stories and at that time Pandit Chandradhar Sharma Guleri or Premchand or Bhagwati Charan Verma used to write psychological stories only. Although there are dozens of stories of Kaushik ji, but only one Tai made him immortal.

Grandson carried forward the legacy

Descendants of Kaushik ji still live in the same locality of Kanpur and his grandson Nilambar Kaushik himself was a good story writer and novelist. Nilambar ji had kept his every memory and everything as it was. He used to live in the same room in which Vishwambharnath Sharma Kaushik used to write. His house and his sitting room are the same as it was when Premchand, Bhagwaticharan Verma and Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi used to come and sit in it. However, by the time Nilambar ji was born, five years had passed since the death of Vishwambhar Nath Sharma Kaushik. Kaushik ji died in the year 1945, but he heard so many stories about his grandfather that his own grandfather became a legend for him. Nilambar ji also passed away in August last year.
