He started his acting career in Bengali cinema during 1967 and debuted with the film Bodhu Boron. After three years, Rakhi got a chance in Hindi cinema. When Rakhi had become a well-known name in Hindi cinema, she met the famous lyricist Gulzar. Both slowly kept coming closer and one day it came that they got married. Both had married during 1973 and within a year they had a daughter Meghna. However, after this, there was a rift in the relationship between Gulzar and Rakhi. Both were separated from each other forever, but they did not divorce each other.

It is said that a slap was the reason for the rift in Gulzar and Rakhi's relationship. According to media reports, during the year 1975, Gulzar went to Kashmir in search of a location for his film Aandhi. There, during a party, when Sanjeev Kumar was trying to approach Suchitra Sen in a drunken state, Gulzar took control of the situation and went to drop Suchitra to her room. There, when Rakhi saw Gulzar and Suchitra together, there was a fight between them. It is said that during that time Gulzar even slapped Rakhi. After this, Rakhi broke Gulzar's condition and signed the film Kabhi Kabhi. Just after this step, there was a rift in his and Gulzar's relationship.
