After the coup in the African country, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has issued an advisory on Friday. In the advisory, Indian citizens have been asked to leave Niger as soon as possible. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told a press conference that the Government of India is closely monitoring the situation in Niger and has also asked people to reconsider their plans if they are traveling to Niamey.
He said that in view of the prevailing situation in Niger, Indian citizens whose presence is not necessary are advised to leave the country at the earliest. All Indian citizens need to note that the airspace is currently closed. That's why there is a need to take security and caution while passing through the land border. Those who are planning to travel to Niger in the coming days are also advised to re-think their travel plans till the situation becomes normal.
Ministry of External Affairs issued emergency number
The Ministry of External Affairs says that Indian citizens who have not registered with the Indian Embassy in Niamey, the capital of Niger, should do so with immediate effect. Also, people can contact the Indian Embassy in Niamey on the emergency number “+22799759975”. Responding to a question about the number of Indians stranded in Niger, Bagchi says that there are about 250 Indians there. The Ministry of External Affairs is requesting all those people who have not yet registered their names with the Indian Embassy to register themselves. He said that the Indian Embassy in Niamey is in touch with the people of his community and they have been told that all are safe.
People trying to leave Niamey
Niger has been engulfed in political chaos since the end of last month. The country's President, Mohammad Bazoum, was deposed in a coup. After the military coup, the commander of Niger's presidential guard, Abdurrahman Tchiyani, declared himself the leader of the country. The uncertainty created a stir in the capital Niamey. The fear of war is haunting the people. A large number of people are buying food items. They are apprehensive that war might break out. The people of Niamey are trying to leave the capital and run away.
