The University Grants Commission will soon start a course for studies and studies on manuscripts. The UGC has constituted a panel to develop a model curriculum. Courses in manuscript may be offered as specialization subjects or as electives. A total of 11 member panels have been constituted. The course will be started as per the National Education Policy 2020.
The panel will develop model syllabus for courses in Manuscriptology and Archeology in various colleges and universities across the country. Manuscriptology is the study of history and literature through the use of handwritten documents, while epigraphy is the study of ancient writing systems, mostly from the classical and medieval periods.
The eleven-member panel will be headed by Prafulla Mishra, former director of the National Mission for Manuscripts, and will include IIT Mumbai professor Malhar Kulkarni, reports The Hindu. Apart from this, Vasant Bhatt, former director of the School of Languages, Gujarat University, and Jatidra Mohan Mishra, professor of Sanskrit at NCERT, Delhi, will also be on the panel.

In this regard, the UGC had sent a proposal to the National Mission for Manuscripts in line with the National Education Policy 2020, stating that a committee has been constituted for standardization of postgraduate diploma courses in Manuscriptology. In a letter dated July 10, the UGC said the committee is expected to develop a model curriculum for courses in both the subjects, which would be open either to students specializing in them or to students in other branches of study. May be offered as an elective.
At the same time, according to UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar, universities can use the curriculum to offer various courses as part of promoting the Indian knowledge system recommended in the NEP.
Why is the course being started?
According to the report, the UGC chairman said that the preservation of Indian manuscripts maintains and enhances the diversity of the country. It contributes to a deeper understanding of Indian heritage. The various states of India are repositories of age-old knowledge, which reflect the ideas, beliefs and practices of the past.
He said that the manuscripts available in various Indian languages and scripts cover a wide variety of subjects such as philosophy, science, literature, religion and much more. Indian Manuscriptology should be supported for its potential to promote academic research and inspire future generations.
How many manuscripts are there in the country
According to NMM there are an estimated 10 million manuscripts in 80 ancient scripts in the country. These manuscripts are written on materials like palm leaves, paper, cloth and bark, while 75 per cent of the existing manuscripts are in Sanskrit and 25 per cent in regional languages.
