In history, 415 years ago, on this day, such an incident took place, due to which India was bound in the chains of slavery. This is the same day when the first ship Hector of the East India Company reached India. The captain of this ship was William Hawkins. The same Hawkins who enslaved the Mughals for five years and kept digging the roots of India from within.
In 1608, on August 24, the first ship of the East India Company, Hector, reached the port of Surat in India. At that time Surat used to be a big center of maritime trade. Mughals also used to trade with other countries from this coast. The East India Company wanted to establish a company here, but it was not possible without the permission of the Mughal emperor.
When meeting the Mughal emperor
This was the period when the reins of the Mughal Empire were in the hands of Jahangir, after the establishment of the East India Company in 1600, ambassadors had appeared in the Mughal court several times and sought the right to trade with India. After this, the company's first ship Hector was allowed to enter India. Hawkins had brought with him the letter of James I, the then King of England, which was to be delivered to Jahangir. After reaching India, he directly went to meet Jahangir.
Slavery in Jahangir's court
William Hawkins had a good knowledge of Turkish and Persian along with English. When he had a meeting with Jahangir, he was impressed. According to the book History of Mughal India, Jahangir stopped William Hawking in the court itself. According to the book written by Hawkins, Jahangir made him a mansabdar of 400 riders. Jahangir was so pleased with Hawkins' work in the Mughal regime that he gave Hawkins the title of Khan and got him married to an Armenian Christian girl from his own court.
Hatching a conspiracy while enslaved by the Mughals
Hawkins enslaved the Mughal emperor Jahangir for five consecutive years, but inside he kept plotting and took permission to set up the first factory of the East India Company. After this, on January 11, 1913, the East India Company opened its first factory in Surat. Who later made India a slave. Hawkins returned to England after the company's factory opened.
The company used to make quilts and mattresses
The first factory of the East India Company, which was opened in Surat, used to make quilts and mattresses. Mughal Emperor Jahangir had given permission for this factory, although some terms and conditions were also imposed on the company by the Mughals.
This is how the British army entered India
When Hector, the first ship of the East India Company, set foot in India, before that the Portuguese and the Dutch had visited India. He also had a good influence in the Mughal court, but when the permission for the factory was taken from Hawkins, the Portuguese and the Dutch lost it. His relations with Jahangir also deteriorated. After this, in 1616, the English ambassador Sir Thomas Roe came to India, who pleased Nur Jahan and Khurram by giving them many gifts and then took permission from Jahangir to bring the company's army to India.
According to the book History of Mughal India, Thomas Roe argued that they needed protection to avoid conflict with the Portuguese. For this, they cannot rely only on the Mughal army. It was only after this decree that the British army entered India and gradually the company established its supremacy.
