Jan Dhan Accounts: The total number of Jan Dhan accounts in the country has crossed the 50 crore mark. Of these, 56 percent accounts are related to women. The Finance Ministry gave this information on Friday. About 67 per cent of these accounts have been opened in villages and small towns, it said in a statement. The total deposits in these accounts are over Rs 2.03 lakh crore, while around 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued free of cost from these accounts. It said that the average balance in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts is Rs 4,076 and of these more than 5.5 crore are receiving Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
The National Mission on Financial Inclusion ie Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched on 28 August 2014. It has been successful in changing the financial landscape of the country. PMJDY offers several benefits to the account holders. There is no need to keep minimum balance in the account. Apart from this, free RuPay debit card, accident insurance of Rs 2 lakh and overdraft facility up to Rs 10,000 are included in this.
This scheme is running since 2014
In 2014, the Modi government had started opening Jan Dhan accounts of crores of people across the country. Even now this process is going on. Last year in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad said in a written reply that about 47.57 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in the country till November 30, of which 38.19 crore are operational, while 10.79 lakh are duplicate. That is, lakhs of accounts have been opened wrongly. Responding to this, experts in the banking sector say that the government may start taking action on this in the coming days. Action can be taken against those who have opened more than one account wrongly. In such a situation, it would be right to close those accounts in time.
